Can good posture improve performance?

by Russell Jones 23 Sep 2025 0 comments

The Posture–Performance Link

Whether you’re lifting in the gym, swimming laps, or swinging a golf club — posture affects how your muscles fire. Poor shoulder alignment can mean:

  • Less power in your lifts
  • Restricted breathing
  • Shoulder instability or pain

Elite athletes know that every detail matters. Training with precision STARTS with posture.

Why athletes use the IRONBACK

The IRONBACK corrects poor shoulder rotation and encourages scapular activation. That translates to:

  • Stronger lifts → scapular stability helps press, row, and pull more effectively.
  • Better stroke mechanics in swimmers → stabilizes shoulders for efficiency.
  • Reduced injury risk → less strain on rotator cuff and traps.

The Science

Research from Melbourne University shows that poor posture increases muscle fatigue and reduces performance in subsequent exercise. Check out the study conducted by Melbourne University here:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7579401/#s5

Conclusion Excerpt from the study

"This study contributed to the understanding of a particular short-duration poor sitting posture on the effect of the performance of physical exercise and the fatigue of back muscles. From statistics of 14 subjects, it was observed that the median frequencies of the sEMG signal of the triceps brachii has significant differences after poor sitting posture, and the median frequencies collected from the RI muscle in the upper back have been shifted in different time levels. The results suggest that the poor posture will lead to a quicker fatigue procedure of the following physical exercise as shown in the median frequency of the corresponding muscles. The results also demonstrated that the proposed frequency analysis techniques were able to identify the frequency range of the individual muscle, which can be used to show a clear shift of median frequencies of noisy sEMG signals in order to represent fatigue" - Front Physiol

Real-World Benefits

Of using the IRONBACK:

  • Gym-goers = more consistent form and power in your lifts
  • Swimmers = smoother strokes
  • Golfers (swing sportsman) = more controlled and consistent swings
  • Everyday legends = improved posture, less upper body pain and more confidence

Train smarter, not harder. Add the IRONBACK to your toolkit for better posture, precision performance, and stronger results.

Until next time, Legends.

Head up, shoulders back.
